Decisions.

Doors of progress. Avenues of opportunity.

Every day we make them. Hundreds if not thousands of decisions. We decide what to do, where to go, how to live. We decide what to wear, when to meet, who to greet. And the more decisions we have to make in any given day the more those choices can burden us. The more they can weigh us down like gravity to the uneven ground of questioning, doubting, worrying, agonizing.

Even to the point of indecision.

Why?

Because we know our decisions have consequences. The big ones change our life’s trajectory, but even the small ones contain within them the slight possibility of far-reaching repercussions.

That reality at times can plague us. It can immobilize, paralyze, incapacitate us to the point that selecting a tube of toothpaste off the store shelf seems like a chore.

And yet, there is hope.

There is freedom, in fact, if we’re willing to take hold of a significant piece of biblical truth.

Solomon, you see, offers a wise word in Proverbs for those carrying the responsibility of choice on their shoulders like a heavy, burdensome task. He offers reprieve especially to those who are struggling to choose at all, who stay tottling on the brink of indecision, even while knowing indecision itself is still making a choice.

Listen to his words.

“Many are the plans in a man’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails” (Proverbs 19:21 NIV).

Prevails. That’s what Solomon has learned.

The Lord’s purpose reigns supreme. His plans conquer, dominate, overcome, succeed no matter what we do and no matter what we decide.

Therefore, we can rest assured. We lean into Him, seek His will, and do our best to make the right decision, but as we do, we can also take comfort knowing whatever we decide, whatever we do, it will be okay.

If we choose wrongly in the moment, it will be okay. If we do our best to follow Him and still fall short, that will be okay too. As long as we invite Him into the process, as long as we allow Him to reside in our hearts right along with those man-made plans, we don’t have to live in indecision any longer.

God’s love and grace are big enough.

Big enough to sort out any mess. Big enough to cover even a multitude of wrongs. His plans will prevail and He Himself will lead us back around (Deuteronomy 32:12). His hands will redirect our steps until we once again stand firm on the path He has for us to go.

And when He does, it will be a better path.

A blessed path.
